WebMaster: DG Winstead
My name is Ronda Winstead. I’m a 50 + year old wife, mother of five children, and grandmother of 11. I’ve been sewing since I just a young girl, learning on my mother’s treadle machine because my two older sisters took over the electric sewing machine. I didn’t care…I was thrilled to learn how to sew a straight stitch and push the treadle to make the machine do it’s magic. I now am the proud owner of that very machine that my grandpa bought used for my mom during World War II while dad was overseas (I wasn’t even a thought of yet). I don’t really remember when I started to love quilts…I think it’s always been in my blood. My mom tells me that I’m very much like her mother, who was very meticulous. She remembers as a girl playing underneath quilts that ladies would be working on and listening to the stories they told. This one day, she remembers the ladies saying something like this…”come on, let’s just get this quilt on and get started before Lulu (my grandma) gets here or she’ll make us take it off and do it right”!
I started out as a self taught quilter and made many mistakes…like trying to hand quilt with regular sewing thread, making a whole quilt with single knit fabrics, using regular needles to quilt with instead of quilting needles, thimble? What’s that? You mean they actually make scissors for left-handed people? As the years progressed, I learned, took some classes, and have been fine tuning my skills for many, many years! I have evolved through the years and my styles and interests and color favorites have changes somewhat, but have always enjoyed some form of quilting all these many years! I used to work mainly on large quilts, but now enjoy working on the smaller ones with smaller more intricate blocks. Probably my favorite types of quilts are scrappy ones. I’m partial to star patterns, and I absolutely love Paper Piecing!!! I enjoy designing my own patterns and love to work on a variety of things so I don’t get bored or stale! I used to hand quilt everything, but since learning the art of machine quilting I’m now a true believer of that!! You could sum it all up with this short sentence…Quilting is what I do!
